Superbug Infection Treatment: A shocking revelation has come to light in ICMR’s study regarding the treatment of superbugs. The study has revealed that patients coming to government hospitals for treatment of superbugs have to spend Rs 4000 to Rs 5000 every day. The main reason for this treatment costing so much money is the expensiveness of the medicines used to treat superbugs. Due to expensive medicines and long stay in ICU, their expenses are increasing, due to which the family members have to borrow money. The situation is coming to the point of selling the house.

At present, relief for the patients coming to the hospitals of the country for treatment of superbug infection seems to be difficult. The situation has become so bad that family members have to borrow money for treatment and admission to ICU. There is even a need to sell the house. In the study published in the international medical journal BMJ Open, about 12 medical institutes including 8 big government and private hospitals of the country were included in ICMR.
what is superbug
Superbugs refer to germs, which are microbial strains. Meaning new strains of bacteria, viruses and fungus. When a bacteria, pathogen or virus develops resistance against antibiotics and other antimicrobial drugs, it becomes a superbug. Medicines do not affect it, hence treatment becomes more difficult.
Every second patient is troubled by financial burden
In this study, researchers found that about 46.5 percent of the patients were facing difficulty in treatment. Such a percentage of patients are forced to borrow money to complete the treatment. They even have to sell their property. It is clear that almost every second patient undergoing treatment for Suprag is struggling with his deteriorating health as well as financial burden.
Looting even in the name of ICU
According to the study, after getting infected with superbugs, the patient has to spend not only on treatment but also on anti-infective medicines. In government hospitals, this expenditure can range from Rs 17,000 to Rs 20,000, whereas in private hospitals the same expenditure is estimated to be Rs 2 to 3 lakh. Along with medicines, one has to pay a lot for staying in ICU also.
Such patients are becoming debtors
Researchers included medical histories of 1,723 patients and interviews with 170 patients for the study. According to Dr. Kamini Walia, senior scientist of ICMR, in government hospitals, in 53.9% cases of Enterobacteriaceae, 43.8% of Acinetobacter and 49.7% of Staphylococcus cases, patients had to spend the most on treatment and became debtors.
